Recycling and Solid Waste Operations Assistant

Position: Recycling and Solid Waste Operations Assistant

Full-time: 40 hours Pay: $18.87 Location: 37th & O Street NW Washington, DC 20057

Under direct supervision, assists in the Recycling and Solid Waste operations of the campus-wide; including Georgetown community at large, multi-material solid waste disposal, recycling, compost and paper shredding programs, including lifting and emptying heavy containers up to 50 pounds, processing materials and cleaning and disinfecting assigned vehicles, collection areas, and collection containers (including indoor trash and recycling). This work involves driving unit vehicles to designated disposal stations, operating bailers, forklifts, or pallet jacks, removing contaminants, lifting heavy items, and maintaining a clean work area, as assigned. Ensures that all disposal areas are clean, organized, fully functional with proper signage and operational. Additionally, this position is required to support the department with any snow removal operations as needed.

This position reports directly to the Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Manager, and works alongside Foreperson, Heavy Vehicle Operators, and other Laborers. Dedicate efforts to ensuring that all recycling and solid waste areas are not only clean but also fully functional and operational. Additionally, handle other assigned duties with diligence and commitment.

Work Interactions

The incumbent works mainly with employees in the Recycling and Waste Management unit and Planning and Facilities Management department, but as work is being performed, may interact with students, faculty, staff and visitors as they traverse the campus. It is important that the employee work cooperatively with fellow employees to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma required
  • Department of Transportation Health Certificate (DOT) required.
  • Two years of experience performing general labor or manual work.
  • Experience directly related to recycling and solid waste management preferred

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification: This position requires the incumbent to operate University commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26K pounds maximum (e.g., tow trucks, box trucks, trash trucks, buses, lifts, etc.). As such, the incumbent must possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed "medical examiner," after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in GU Policy 1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions ( ).

A valid driver's license from Maryland, District of Columbia or Virginia is required
