Chief Health Informatics Officer

The Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) is a physician who provides leadership in planning, direction, and support of an integrated program for health care informatics at the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHCS). The incumbent must be technically skilled and knowledgeable about clinical reminders. The CHIO will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all clinical reminders. The CHIO will set up, with input from the service chiefs, provider profiles, with real-time data, on all clinical performance measures for each provider. The CHIO will automate a scorecard on clinical measures and other dimensions of care.

FUNCTIONS AND SCOPE:

  • The CHIO works closely with the Ol&T, Biomedical, and clinical staff to ensure appropriate and timely implementation and operational management of CPRS, VistA and associated software packages.
  • The CHIO chairs the Health Informatics Integrated Governance. This committee considers both operational issues related to clinical informatics, as well as explores new strategies for using clinical informatics.
  • The Committee makes recommendations regarding acquisition of new technology and equipment that impact clinical care delivery.
  • The CHIO also represents CAVHCS on any VISN 7 Information Technology Committees.
  • The CHIO serves as an ex-officio member of the Quality Leadership Board and ensures that issues related to clinical informatics are considered, reviewed, and implemented as appropriate.
  • The CHIO is expected to foster innovative technologies in clinical documentations and clinical informatics and confer with other VA facilities throughout the country to learn about advances that have worked to improve care delivery.
  • The CHIO collaborates with Department Chairs and top leadership to assure systems are in place to meet and exceed performance standards, clinical guidelines, and prevention indices.
  • The CHIO maintains expert working knowledge of CPRS and the ability to understand a wide range of clinical needs; coordinates institutional compliance with external accrediting organizations; ensures employee education/awareness to optimize computer use, initially and on an on-going basis, as it relates to clinical informatics.
  • The CHIO is clinically and administratively responsible to the Deputy Chief of Staff. Assignments are made in terms of broad objectives, leaving the matters of method, design, implementation, and evaluation to the discretion of the incumbent who works with autonomy and with full authority.
  • The work of the incumbent is reviewed only for accomplishment of program objectives.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Based on the agency needs)
