Job Description

Assistant Principal

Great Oaks Charter School - Bridgeport

About Great Oaks Charter School, Bridgeport

Three things are true about us.

One. A child's zip code should not determine their future.

We are a tuition-free public charter school in Bridgeport, built on three pillars: Mastery, Leadership, and Community. Our embedded AmeriCorps tutoring program puts an extra adult in every ELA and Math classroom because small-group instruction should not be a luxury reserved for private schools.

We are not a place that lowers expectations to match circumstances.

Two. We invest in the adults who invest in our students.

Every staff member, in every role, is supported by dedicated academic coaches, real professional development, and a culture where colleagues actually show up for one another. You will not be left to figure it out alone.

We are not interested in burning people out and replacing them. We are interested in building careers.

Three. We are building something for Bridgeport that did not exist before we got here.

What you do at Great Oaks today shapes what is possible for our students tomorrow. That is not a slogan. That is the job.

We are not finished.

If that sounds like the kind of place you want to work, keep reading.

Position Summary

You will serve as a key member of our school leadership team and a strategic thought partner to the Principal, driving academic excellence, school culture, and operational systems. You will work alongside the Principal to assess what our school needs, design the systems that meet those needs, and ensure strong execution across every corner of the building.

This role is for a leader who operates with an ownership mindset, who solves problems before they grow, and who builds the kind of sustainable structures that hold up under pressure.

What You Will Actually Do

School Leadership & Strategic Partnership

  • Partner with the Principal to identify priorities, analyze schoolwide data, and develop strategic action plans

  • Proactively assess trends in academics, behavior, and attendance, anticipating challenges before they grow

  • Lead the implementation and monitoring of schoolwide initiatives, ensuring alignment and follow-through across teams

  • Drive continuous improvement of school systems, structures, and routines

Culture & Climate Leadership

  • Co-lead the development, implementation, and refinement of the school's culture systems and expectations

  • Ensure consistent and equitable implementation of behavior systems across classrooms and common spaces

  • Design and monitor systems that promote positive student behavior, engagement, and accountability

  • Analyze discipline and culture data regularly to spot trends and implement targeted interventions

  • Manage the culture team and counseling team to provide holistic support for students

Instructional Leadership & Teacher Development

  • Supervise and coach a cohort of teachers across content areas through regular walkthroughs, informal observations, and two formal evaluations annually

  • Provide clear, actionable, and consistent feedback that improves instructional practice and student outcomes

  • Support teachers in implementing high-quality instruction, strong classroom management, and effective engagement strategies

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to plan and deliver professional development aligned to school priorities

  • Monitor and support the implementation of schoolwide instructional expectations (engagement strategies, CHAMPS, LI/SC alignment)

Systems Implementation & Accountability

  • Design and maintain systems that ensure strong execution of academics, culture, and attendance priorities

  • Monitor fidelity of implementation across teams and follow up to ensure consistency

  • Lead or support key operational systems including MTSS, attendance tracking, behavior systems, and data cycles

  • Hold staff accountable to expectations through clear communication, follow-up, and support

Student & Family Engagement

  • Meet with students to support behavior and academic growth

  • Partner with families to communicate progress, address concerns, and build strong relationships

  • Support restorative practices and problem-solving conversations that reinforce accountability and growth

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate

  • Is a strong instructional leader with experience coaching teachers to improve student outcomes

  • Thinks strategically, identifying root causes and designing effective systems

  • Operates proactively, anticipating challenges before they escalate

  • Builds and maintains a strong, consistent school culture

  • Communicates with clarity, delivering direct and actionable feedback

  • Stays organized and manages multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Is collaborative, reflective, and solutions-oriented

  • Believes deeply that all students can achieve at high levels

Preferred experience

  • Master's in Educational Leadership

  • Connecticut Intermediate Administration or Supervision Certification (092)

  • Minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience

  • Prior leadership experience in a school setting (instructional leadership, dean, coach, etc.)

  • Experience supervising and evaluating teachers

  • Experience working in urban or turnaround school environments strongly preferred

What You Can Expect From Us

  • A school community that puts students at the center of every decision

  • A Principal and leadership team genuinely committed to your growth as a leader

  • Colleagues who collaborate, share resources, and have your back

  • Competitive compensation ($95,000 - $105,000) and comprehensive benefits, with exact compensation based on experience and education

  • Paid school breaks and dedicated planning time

  • The chance to build something lasting in a community that needs you
